How we deliver the teaching of food is changing. There is no doubt ofthe importance food decisions young people make, or that they have a massive impact on their health and others around them. We at Gartree pride ourselves in providing a food based curriculum that informs students of the nutritional values of different foods on offer, and the benefits of eating a healthy and balanced diet.
Key Stage 3
In the early years, students follow a compulsory curriculum that not only informs them about making the right dietary decisions, but also focusses on building the skills needed to plan and prepare meals and dishes with a healthy approach to eating. Following on from this experience, students whom decide to continue Food Preparation and Nutrition at GCSE level, have an opportunity to build a portfolio of skills in year 9, and follow a more scientific approach to learning about food. This will still involve students adopting a practical approach to learning, and unlocking the theory behind food.
Food provenance also features in the new curriculum, and has an influence on the dishes students will experience preparing. Students will be introduced to new and exciting foods from other cultures and regions. We actively encourage students to get involved in food preparation at home and visit the annual Good Food Show annually. We invite professional food experts in to school to share with our students’ knowledge and skills and give them links to learning with industry. The Food Preparation and Nutrition department currently works closely with the Design and Technology department, but stands alone in its own right.
